Re: Letter of Welcome to Cochise County

Dear Honorable Vice President Kamala Harris,

It is my distinct honor to Welcome You to beautiful and historic Cochise County. Known for its legacy agriculture and historic western theme, Cochise County is home to the U.S. Army Post Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista, Douglas, Tombstone Willcox, Benson, Huachuca City, and mining towns like Bisbee and so much more to explore and visit.

After serving these communities for 42 years, both as a soldier and for the last 40 years as a law enforcement professional, I am proud to call Cochise County my home. My wife and I have raised our 3 children here and now, they have all decided to raise their families here too.

Our law enforcement professionals who serve our communities at all levels work within a team environment as we unite to promote and sustain that “Quality of Life” for those who call Cochise County their home. I have traveled throughout this great nation and the professionalism and respect for law enforcement in their communities is top-notch and one of a kind here.

Your visit comes with mixed emotions and reviews as it relates to a border in turmoil and the lack of timeliness. To no avail, America’s Sheriffs continue to unite and share our communities and realities with President Biden and yourself. I have attached a recent letter from America’s sheriffs outlining our position and frustrations with your reading and hopeful application. As you will read, this lack of engagement, acknowledgment, and prioritization, our nation’s communities have suffered. I respect your time and will leave you with an open invitation to meet with the Alliance of America’s Sheriffs' leadership to begin restoring and repairing this relationship along with serving our citizens as scribed within our Oaths of Offices.

In summary, I hope you enjoy your visit and I look forward to our continued dialogue as we share our Oaths to protect our communities and country. Thank you in advance.

Respectfully Submitted,

Mark J. Dannels
